March 2025 Update
Hello all,
Last time was quite short, cause all I had to say was that main development was finished. This time I'm going to go into more detail on what is left with the game, what I've been working on, and how long I think it'll take, plus more!
What's Left
Here's what is still left for me to do to call this game finished:
- Complete the Collections Page (I'll get to this later)
- Add in the Music Track locations
- Add in more Treasure Chests w/ Decivise Crystals in them, since they were a later addition
- Super Secret Thing in Super Secret Area !!
- The Angel Lake Arcade game I've been putting off
- The Notebook and all it's entries
- Various dialogue additions all over the world
- Various small things I've been meaning tor revamp for a while like Lazerous' item concotion
- Game Balance!!!
- PLUS Replaying the game + Fixing issues
- Oh yeah and the credits lol
It may seem like a lot, and it kind of is, but most of this isn't full on active development. It's more quick and easy things that have built up over time. I have already fixed the vast majority of issues from my last playtest, meaning I'm simply getting the last of the gameplay mechanics and stuff ready so I can just go into playtesting frenzy.
What I'm Doing Right Now
As of this writing, I am in the process of adding flavor text all around the world, and filling out the collections page. Once again, I'll get into the collections a bit later, but that's my main goal right now. Once that's done, I plan to just knock out everything else on that list rapid fire. The biggest hurdle I foresee being the Notebook, as I'll have to map out what tutorials I want included and when to include them. Game balance and playtesting is also another major hurdle but that will be fun at least.
How Much Longer?
Honestly, I'm not sure. It's nearly April already, so my goal of June seems...possible but also out of reach? The last thing I want is to rush this to meet some arbitrary deadline. That said, there was a lot more on the list above that I opted out of just due to not thinking it mattered anymore.
Removals
It's not everything, but here's a small list of things I am thinking about/planning on removing from the game:
- Bestiary: It was a lot of work for little reward. I felt constricted to adhere to that bestiary and limited my creativity. I think removing it will be for the better.
- Post Battle Dynamic Dialogue: Here's something I'm torn on. My original goal was make it so every single area/story segment the post battle dialogue changes, rather than be static the entire game. I still want to do this, but it would eat up A LOT of time. Maybe version 1 will be without it and it can be something I work on once people actually get to play the game for a version 1.1 release?
- Collections Locations & Area Count Number: I don't think I ever talked about this, but originally I wanted to make a Count for chests/Friend Conversations/Hidden items in each area and you'd be able to see how many of each you have in each area. I'm doing away with this in favor the Collections page I'm showing off soon.
Something New aka Collections Page
Alright, here we go.
This is the Collections Page, which will track the players collection of four different things:
Friend Conversations, Hidden Items, DScrolls, and History Books.
This came about because while playtesting I needed a list of where the Friend Conversations were. There are 145 of them and I just can't remember what I got. Thus a list of which FCs you got, where they were, and a short blurb about them came about. While working on this, I decided on three other things that will count for 100% collection. (btw, FCs are numbered based on the order I wrote them in, that's it. Though they do follow the main story aka early FCs are low numbers, later ones are high numbers).
Hidden Items remain the same. They're on the list to make a clear and consice location tracker for hidden items.
DScrolls are here so the player can get a good sense of how many there are, and if they've missed any.
History Books are new: These are essentially lore that just can't be told via the story. None of it is vital to playing the main game, they
are simply there to expand the history of the game world and the people and places in it.
You might notice treasure chests are NOT on this list. Originally I wanted them, but the amount of work to add nearly 600 chests to this list would be astronomical. The collection # of chests will instead remain on the Save Screen I've shown off earlier, that I plan on revamping.
That's pretty much all I got for today. I've been working on this each and every day getting some done. I just need to get past this last few hurdles and get to playtesting. My hope is that by the end of April I should be exclusively in the playtesting phase.
Thanks as always for following along, we are almost there!
